Exploring Sasco: Off-Road Adventure to Arizona's Forgotten Ghost Town | A&G Adventures

Join us on a search for the Historic town of Sasco. The town of Sasco originated around the establishment of a smelter by the Southern Arizona Smelter Company in 1907. This smelter was crucial for processing copper ore extracted from nearby mines, particularly those in the Red Rock area. The town primarily served the purpose of housing the employees and their families who worked at the smelter and the associated mines. As the mining operations in the region prospered, Sasco expanded, becoming a fully functional company town complete with various amenities such as housing, a school, a post office, and other facilities necessary for the community's daily life. At its peak, Sasco had a substantial population and was a bustling hub for the mining industry. However, the prosperity of Sasco was relatively short-lived. The decline in copper prices, changes in mining technologies, and the depletion of easily accessible ore deposits led to the gradual decline of the town. The operations at the smelter and the mines became less profitable, causing a significant downturn in Sasco's economy. By the mid-20th century, the town began to decline rapidly as mining activities diminished. Families moved away in search of other opportunities, and businesses closed down. Eventually, Sasco transformed into a ghost town, with many of its buildings abandoned and left to decay. Today, Sasco stands as a remnant of its former self, a ghost town that serves as a reminder of Arizona's mining history. Visitors can explore the deserted structures, remnants of the once-thriving community, and witness the vestiges of a bygone era.
