The town primarily served the purpose of housing the employees and their families who worked at the smelter and the associated mines. As the mining operations in the region prospered, Sasco expanded, becoming a fully functional company town complete with various amenities such as housing, a school, a post office, and other facilities necessary for the community's daily life. At its peak, Sasco had a substantial population and was a bustling hub for the mining industry. However, the prosperity of Sasco was relatively short-lived. The decline in copper prices, changes in mining technologies, and the depletion of easily accessible ore deposits led to the gradual decline of the town.
