Abandoned, Preserved, Forgotten Castle Dome Ghost Town

Castle Dome Mine Museum is a preserved Old West mining town and ghost-town museum in Yuma County, Arizona. The site sits on one of the state’s longest-working mining districts, active from the 1860s through the late 20th century, producing rich deposits of silver, lead, and other minerals. Today, more than 50 original and restored buildings — including a saloon, schoolhouse, sheriff’s office, hotel, and general store — showcase frontier life during Arizona’s mining boom. Visitors can walk through the recreated town and view thousands of authentic artifacts recovered from the area’s roughly 300 mine sites, offering a vivid, immersive look at the rugged daily lives of miners and settlers. Old Yuma Prison is one of Arizona’s most famous historic landmarks — but this time, we didn’t take the usual route. Using a hand-drawn map from Aaron’s dad, we left the pavement behind and followed the same desert backroads he once documented to reach this notorious territorial prison. Along the way, we experienced the land the way early travelers, guards, and inmates would have — slow, rugged, and intentional. As we tour Old Yuma Prison, we explore its history as a territorial prison opened in 1876, the harsh conditions inmates endured, and the surprising stories hidden within its stone walls. From the dark cell and guard tower to the cemetery where prisoners were laid to rest, this journey turns a well-known destination into a deeply personal experience.
