Exploring Pioneer Pass: Scenic Road Trip from Globe to Pinal Peak | A&G Adventures

Starting from Globe, Arizona, the route circles the south side of Pinal Peak and ends on Forest Service Road 651, leading to Pinal Peak. The trip climbs to Pioneer Pass at 6,000 feet, descends into Pioneer and Bobtail Basins at 5,000 feet, and then climbs back up to 6,000 feet on Pinal Peak Road. The journey has n six miles rated as moderate difficulty. The most challenging section was surveyed by the Forest Service in August 2019 for potential improvements. The first five miles from US 60 are paved, leading to the Ice House picnic area. The road begins in Pinyon-Juniper Forest and transitions to ponderosa pine at higher elevations. Pioneer Pass offers scenic vistas and a change in landscape due to the southern exposure. The route includes eroded gullies that slow travel, but overall, it offers beautiful views and a glimpse of Magma Mine near Superior. A water tank with ramps for wildlife can also be spotted along the way.
