Uncovering Civil War History – Lost Artifacts Possibly Hidden in the Owl Head Buttes

Join us on an exciting off-road adventure as we follow an old map left by Aaron’s father. The only clue? "Left at Owl Head." With no further details, we have to explore different routes through the rugged Arizona desert in search of Civil War history. Our journey kicks off with an off-road trek through rough desert terrain, navigating rocky trails and dry washes before reaching a remote area where we decide to hike. As we climb a nearby hill, we spot two unusual structures in the distance. Naturally, we decide to check it out. What we discover is an abandoned ranch from the 1950s. We fully document the site, exploring both the cattle section and the collapsed remains of the main house. It’s a fascinating detour into the harsh realities of life for Arizona ranchers decades ago. While it's not connected to the Civil War, it offers a glimpse into the past and tells a story of survival in this rugged land. Back on the trail, we come to a crossroads with multiple possible routes that could be the "left at Owl Head" from the map. We take the first option, heading down a dry wash. As we explore, we uncover several pieces of melted pewter. Could this be evidence of an old fire? Or maybe remnants from an ant hill casting? While it’s an interesting find, we don’t think it’s related to the Civil War. Our next route takes us farther from the Owl Head Buttes, and we come across an enormous, hollowed-out cholla cactus. It’s an amazing natural formation, and we take some time to document it before continuing our search. Finally, we reach a point where the road becomes too rough for the Jeep, so we grab our metal detectors and continue on foot. As we scan the rocky desert floor, we make an incredible discovery—a Civil War-era 2-cent coin! It’s an exciting find, a rare artifact from the 1860s that connects us to the past and adds a new layer to our search for Arizona Ranger history in this area.
